A Scribe Amidst The Lions – “Sunken Cities”
January 16, 2009 in CD Reviews
It’s always exciting to be handed a album of a band you haven’t even ever heard the name of before. Not sure what to expect except for the vague comment that I should like them. It seems my friends know my taste in music though because upon first listen I was definitely into them. Maybe it is because I am going through an ambient/Indie, which is how A Scribe defines themselves on Myspace, phase or possibly just because Sunken Cities is a good album I haven’t stopped spinning it for a few days. The guitar work stands out amongst the piano which is something different from most bands in this genre. Usually it seems that the synth and effects overpower the guitar, but A Scribe has found a happy medium. The vocals creep into your ears and haunt you in the best way possible. Each song brings something new to the table, each one sounding different than the last. With the soft lead ups into powerful collisions of sound it is easy to get hooked. A Scribe amidst the Lions has found a formula that works and in Sunken Cities they showcase it. I’m recommending this band and album to my friends, you should do the same.
Sounds like: Portugal the Man, Mars Volta
