Internships/Jobs:
Q: Do you have any internships or job openings?
A: No, sorry. We are always looking for contributing writers. Send an email to nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com and ask for more details. Local music enthusiasts with good writing skills can ply their craft. But I cannot offer money or school credits.
Shows:
(Questions regarding the shows page should go to shows@sandiegopunk.com)
Q: Can you get my band a show in San Diego?
A: No, we rarely book shows, and when we do, they’re usually full. We have a venue list that has booking information for various clubs around town, with that information, you should be set to book your own show.
Q: How do I post my show?
A: Send an email to shows@sandiegopunk.com that includes the following:
- Name of all bands, call out the headlining band
- Show date and time
- Show cost
- Restrictions (21+, 18+, all ages)
- Any other details you want posted
Q: How do I edit a show listing?
A: If the shows page has incorrect information, please e-mail shows@sandiegopunk.com and let us know the show date, the bands, and venue, and tell us what needs to be fixed. Please put “show correction” in your subject line so we don’t mistake your e-mail for spam.
Q: Will you put my band’s picture up for the “featured show” on the home page?
A: Probably not. We try to keep this by invitation only. If you’re booking a benefit show, having a CD release, it’s your band’s last show, or some other big event, you can send us a note to let us know, but we can’t guarantee or promise anything.
Q: I drove six hours, across 12 states, and spent my life savings on gas to get a show you had listed. I got there and the place didn’t even exist. I’m really pissed at you!
A: Our shows page is a work in progress, and we can’t guarantee the accuracy of any of the information posted. Before you drive across the county, or even just a few miles, please make sure to call the venue listed (we have a venue list with contact numbers available) to confirm the show. If a show listed seems suspicious, it’s probably not happening. Occasionally, people submit fake shows that we don’t catch, if you notice one, please e-mail shows@sandiegopunk.com and let us know.
Band Publicity:
Q: How can my band get publicity on sandiegopunk.com?
A: In general, publicity on this website is limited to the following forms: interviews, CD reviews, show listings, news posts, band links, mp3 of the week, band of the month. Information on all these topics should be covered by the other questions on this page. However, you’re always welcome to e-mail Nick personally to discuss specific plans for your band. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you’re from out of SD (excluding Tijuana), sorry, we can’t help.
Q: How can I submit a band for mp3 of the week or band of the month?
A: Send an e-mail to nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com with the following information:
- Band name
- Band website address
- MP3 (i.e. myspace, etc) website address
- A brief description of your sound
- Why you think you deserve to be band of the month or mp3 of the week
- Anything else you’d like to add
(Note: To be considered for either category, you must be based in San Diego and have mp3s available for download on a website like myspace, et cetra)
Q: Can you link my band on the bands page?
A: Probably. There’s a form to do this available at the bottom of the bands page. Please follow all the instructions listed there (your band must be in San Diego County, you have to be a real band, etc).
Q: Can my band submit our CD for review SanDiegoPunk.com?
A: Maybe. Email nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com and he’ll give you the address to send your CD to. Please know that when you mail us a CD you’re taking a gamble. There’s a chance that we won’t give it any coverage, and there’s a chance that we may review it, but be quite harsh. If you’re afraid of either of those possibilities, don’t send a CD for review. Also, if we really like your CD, we may choose to do some sort of feature instead of a review. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you’re from out of SD, sorry, we can’t help.
Q: Can you review my band’s show?
A: E-mail to Nick about your music and what type of coverage you’re looking for.
Q: How can my band get an interview?
A: Usually we’ll get in touch directly if we’re interested in interviewing your band. However, if you’re a well-respected San Diego band, and you think you have some amazing stories to tell, you can send an e-mail to nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com try to “sell him ” on an interview. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you’re from out of SD, sorry, we can’t help.
Q: How do I post band news?
A: Email nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com. As long as the news relates to San Diego, we will generally post it. Please make sure to put “news submission” or another tag line in the subject of your message so that we know what you’re interested in. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you’re from out of SD, sorry, we can’t help.
Q: My band is playing at (insert venue here) on (insert date here) will you please come check us out?
A: Do you want me to review your show? That might be tricky. Are you looking for a best friend? That’s not me. Send me an email and we can talk.
Q: My band is from out of town, can we get some publicity?
A: No, sorry. Since we have limited staff, time, and money we only have time to cover San Diego county based bands. Unless you are famous and want me to interview you.
Miscellaneous / Hate Mail:
Q: What happened to the message board?
A: I got rid of the board because nobody was using it.
Q: You call your site sandiegopunk, but you don’t cover (my definition of) punk.
A: The word punk means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To us, “punk” includes genre’s like indie rock, rock, hardcore, traditional “old-school” punk, ska, emo, and more. To a certain extent, we change our coverage as the San Diego music community changes. Since traditional punk isn’t quite as popular these days as hardcore/scremo/etc we don’t cover it as much. If there’s a genre we’re missing out on, or some amazing bands you think we need to be covering, you should send us an email and let us know. Often times bands aren’t covered simply because we don’t know about them. This website is a group effort; we need your participation and input.
Updated answer: It is not very punk of me to give a shit about you bitching. If you don’t like the bands that we cover here, then piss off.
Q: Blah, blah, blah. (Insert complaint here). Your site sucks, I hope you die, fuck you!
A: Believe it or not, we get e-mails like this on occasion. If you’re unhappy with something about the site, please e-mail us in a civilized manner and we can fix any problem there is. If you treat us with respect, we’ll do the same for you, and we promise a response. Occasionally, we mistake e-mail for spam, so if you don’t get a response in three to four days, simply write back (it helps to include a subject line like “sandiegopunk.com complaint”)
Also, please know that this site is maintained more or less by one person and a few volunteer writers. We’re all busy, this isn’t anyone’s full time job. We maintain this site as an attempt to help the San Diego music community, it takes a lot of effort and there isn’t much reward, so please, please, please send constructive criticism, not hate mail.
Got something else that wasn’t on here, email nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com.
