You call your site sandiegopunk, but you don't cover
(my definition of) punk.
Blah blah blah, fuck you, your site sucks, I hope you die!
Internships/Jobs:
Q: Do you have any internships or job openings?
A: No, sorry. This site is currently being managed by a 21 year old college student. It's ran from his bedroom in his spare time with help from a few select individuals. No one has a "job" or a "career" here, it's just a hobby. The site doesn't make much money either ($50-$450/month) so we don't really have money to pay anyone. If you're looking for an internship or some way to get involved with the music industry in San Diego, try getting in touch with SD Music Matters, SD City Beat, the Che Cafe (volunteer!), Epicentre, or Holiday Matinee. You'll probably have better luck getting an internship in Orange County or LA where there are more record labels and promotion companies.
Shows:
(You should read the guidelines below, but in general, questions regarding
the shows page should go to shows@sandiegopunk.com).
Q: Can you get my band a show in San Diego?
A: No, we rarely book shows, and when we do, they're usually full. We have
a venue list that has booking information
for various clubs around town, with that information, you should be set to
book your own show.
Q: How do I post my show?
A: There's a form at the bottom of the shows
page, please fill it out entirely, and make sure the show isn't already posted.
Q: Why was my show post rejected?
A: There are instructions on the shows page on how to submit your show. Following
those instructions will keep your show from getting rejected. The most common
reasons for rejection are using caps lock on the band(s) or venue (we try
to keep the shows page looking uniform and don't want to be seen as supporting
certain shows over others), forgetting to input the date, and submitting a
show outside of San Diego County. If you followed all the instructions, and
you still don't know why your show got rejected, e-mail shows@sandiegopunk.com.
(Please put "shows question" or something similar in your subject
line so we know your e-mail isn't spam).
Q: How do I edit a show listing?
A: If the shows page has incorrect information, please e-mail showedit@sandiegopunk.com
and let us know the show date, the bands, and venue, and tell us what needs
to be fixed. Please DO NOT re-submit the show, often times we won't catch
this, and then there will be two listings for the same show. Also, please
put "show correction" in your subject line so we don't mistake your
e-mail for spam.
Q: Will you add a link to my band (myspace, etc) on our show listing on your site?
A: We only link to venues on our shows page, if you would like your venue to be linked please e-mailshows@sandiegopunk.com (it helps a lot to include a subject line like "show edit" or "link our venue for X/XX show date" so we know your e-mail isn't spam). We do not link to band pages within the show directory (if you want your band linked on the site, we can link you in the "bands" section). We simply don't have enough time to create a band link to every band we have listed in this section, thanks for your understanding. We also only link to bands based in San Diego county who have mp3s posted.
Q: Will you put my band's picture up for the "featured show" on the home page?
A: Probably not. We try to keep this by invitation only. If you're booking a benefit show, having a CD release, it's your band's last show, or some other big event, you can send us a note to let us know, but we can't guarantee or promise anything.
Q: I drove six hours, across 12 states, and spent my life
savings on gas to get a show you had listed. I got there and the place didn't
even exist. I'm really pissed at you!
A: Our shows page is a work in progress, and we can't guarantee the accuracy
of any of the information posted (in fact, we have a disclaimer at the top
of the page). Before you drive across the county, or even just a few miles,
please make sure to call the venue listed (we have a venue
list with contact numbers available) to confirm the show. If a show listed
seems suspicious, it's probably not happening. Occasionally, people submit
fake shows that we don't catch, if you notice one, please e-mail shows@sandiegopunk.com
and let us know.
Band Publicity:
Q: How can my band get publicity on sandiegopunk.com?
A: In general, publicity on this website is limited to the following forms:
interviews, CD reviews, show listings, news posts, band links, mp3 of the
week, band of the month. Information on all these topics should be covered
by the other questions on this page. However, you're always welcome to e-mail Nick personally to discuss specific
plans for your band. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you're from out of SD (excluding Tijuana), sorry, we can't help.
Q: How can I submit a band for mp3 of the week or band of
the month?
A: Send an e-mail to nick.carter@sandiegopunk.com with the following information:
- band name
- band website address
- mp3 (i.e. myspace, purevolume, etc) website address
- a brief description of your sound
- why you think you deserve to be band of the month or mp3 of the week
- anything else you'd like to add
(Note: To be considered for either category, you must be based in San Diego
(or Tijuana) and have mp3s available for download on a website like myspace,
purevolume, et cetra)
Q: Can you link my band on the bands page?
A: Probably. There's a form to do this available at the bottom of the bands
page. Please follow all the instructions listed there (your band must be in
San Diego County, you have to be a real band, etc).
Q: Can my band submit our CD for review SanDiegoPunk.com?
A: Maybe. Email Nick and
he'll give you the address to send your CD to. Please know that when you mail
us a CD you're taking a gamble. There's a chance that we won't give it any
coverage, and there's a chance that we may review it, but be quite harsh.
If you're afraid of either of those possibilities, don't send a CD for review.
Also, if we really like your CD, we may choose to do some sort of feature
instead of a review. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you're from out of SD (excluding Tijuana), sorry, we can't help.
Q: Can you review my band's show?
A: Truth is, the real answer is just no. It's logistically hard for us to
get show reviews, and they usually don't come out all that great. If you're
looking for publicity, try submitting yourself for band of the month, or writing
a personal (hopefully short and to the point) e-mail to Nick
about your music and what type of coverage you're looking for.
Q: How can my band get an interview?
A: Usually we'll get in touch directly if we're interested in interviewing
your band. However, if you're a well-respected San Diego band, and you think
you have some amazing stories to tell, you can send Nick
a personal e-mail to try to "sell him " on an interview, but please
don't hold your breath. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you're from out of SD (excluding Tijuana), sorry, we can't help.
Q: How do I post band news?
A: Probably, email Nick.
As long as the news relates to San Diego, we will generally post it. Please
make sure to put "news submission" or another tag line in the subject
of your message so that we know what you're interested in. Please note, we only cover San Diego county based bands, if you're from out of SD (excluding Tijuana), sorry, we can't help.
Q: My band is playing at
(insert venue here) on (insert date here) will you please come
check us out?
A: Here's Joel's answer:
Key things to keep in mind when asking this question: One, if what you're
really asking for is a show review, please say so explicitly. Two, I spend
nine months of the year in Berkeley (for school), so chances are I'll be out
of town. If I happen to be in San Diego, I'll consider it, but unless I really
dig your mp3s, chances are I won't make it out to the show (I'm just like
anyone else, I don't want to watch a band whose music I don't enjoy). Three,
there are no "benefits" your band can get through me seeing your
show that you can't get through sending me a link to your mp3s, providing
me with pictures of your band, et cetra. If you're concerned about publicity
for your band, you should e-mail me directly with what you had in mind and
I'll help as much as I can depending on the quality of your band, how accessible
your band is online (i.e. do you have a website, mp3s, etc), and how hardworking
your band is.
Q: My band is from out of town, can we get some publicity?
A: No, sorry. Since we have limited staff, time, and money (this site is a
hobby, not a job) we only have time to cover San Diego county (and Tijuana)
based bands.
Miscellaneous / Hate Mail:
Q: What happened to the message board?
A: Sandiegopunk hasn't had an official message board for some time now, however if you're looking for a place where people in San Diego talk about music, you can try: forum.salvationarmory.com and thepunkboard.com/forum.
Q: You call your site sandiegopunk,
but you don't cover (my definition of) punk.
A: The word punk means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
To us, "punk" includes genre's like indie rock, rock, hardcore,
traditional "old-school" punk, ska, emo, and more. To a certain
extent, we change our coverage as the San Diego music community changes. Since
traditional punk isn't quite as popular these days as hardcore/scremo/etc
we don't cover it as much. If there's a genre we're missing out on, or some
amazing bands you think we need to be covering, you should send us an email
and let us know. Often times bands aren't covered simply because we don't
know about them. This website is a group effort; we need your participation
and input.
Q: Blah, blah, blah. (Insert complaint
here). Your site sucks, I hope you die, fuck you!
A: Believe it or not, we get e-mails like this on occasion. If you're unhappy
with something about the site, please e-mail us in a civilized manner and
we can fix any problem there is. If you treat us with respect, we'll do the
same for you, and we promise a response. Occasionally, we mistake e-mail for
spam, so if you don't get a response in three to four days, simply write back
(it helps to include a subject line like "sandiegopunk.com complaint")
Also, please know that this site is maintained more or less by two people
and a few volunteer writers. We're all busy, this isn't anyone's full time
job (in fact, the site barely a profit, especially compared to the time it
takes to maintain), a lot of us are still in school in addition to working,
sometimes we take vacations and can't answer our e-mail for a few days...
I think you get the idea, we're just normal people like you. We maintain this
site as an attempt to help the San Diego music community, it takes a lot of
effort and there isn't much reward, so please, please, please send constructive
criticism, not hate mail.
Got something else that wasn't on here, email Nick.
